What is yoga?
The word yoga means union. There are 8 different ways to practice the discipline of yoga, at Twist we teach Hatha yoga; the physical discipline that increases energy, vitality and promotes over all mental and physical well being.
What do I need to prepare for class or private lesson?
A smiling face! Wear confortbale clothes that will not bind or hinder movement. It is best if you practice yoga on an empty stomach, 2 hours after your last meal. If you need to, eat a light fruit snack for a little pick me up before practice. Please plan on 5 minutes before and after practicing to relax and prepare and benefit, for and from your practice.
Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
No, this is a common myth, yoga creates flexibility. When a person wants to get strong they lift weights. Likewise when a person wants to get flexible they do yoga. Strength creates flexibility and yoga creates both.
What should I wear to a yoga class?
It is important to wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in. For women we recommend lycra fabric, that is form fitting and comfortable, and for men; shorts.
How often should I practice yoga?
The frequency is up to you. Yoga is a fabulous physical workout and coming 2-3 times a week you will feel and see the benefit of yoga in a short time. If you are wanting to increase overall conditioning including weight loss, toning, and gaining flexibility, then plan on practiciing 4- 6 times a week. Set a schedule, practice at the same time each day and remember to focus your achievements.
Will I feel results practicing 1 time a week?
Since you only get to practice 1 time a week, it will take longer for your body to respond to yoga then if you were to practice 2-4 times a week. However, you will begin to increase energy and detoxify within your first month and after 6 months you most likely will be wanting to arrange your schedule to fit in more yoga time. For now enjoy time practicing and bask in the confidence that practicing the Twist series will give you.
Will I get a workout?
Yes, Twist’s 5 unique series' will all give you various degrees of physical exertion. Flame and Breeze are both very powerful yoga. They will tone, balance, help to lose weight. After about 5 classes of either Flame or Breeze you will know each posture and the workout will burn around 700 calories per 90 minutes. In the Bamboo classes you will be relaxing which reduces stress, and stress lowers cortisol levels helping you balance your body’s weight. Stone classes are advanced classes which will tone, relax and bring balance to your already dedicated yoga practice.
Will I get a cardiovascular workout?
Yes similar to cross training, yoga continuously works with the breath which increases cardiovascular health even while relaxing. However, our Breeze and Flame classes will increase your heart rate throughout your class, it is always good to supplement yoga with walking or jogging to keep your heart in top condition.
I am busy, can yoga still work for me?
Twist yoga is designed for our busy lifestyles to increase health and help us look and feel our best. You will be giving yourself an internal massage and chiropractic adjustment while working with a personal trainer by your side, gently guiding you to relax and focus on more breath. Making yoga safe and accessible is a goal of Twist's private classes use Twists' podcasts, and CD's, in combination with private instruction and you will know how to practice yoga anywhere at anytime not only in a ygoa class.
When I begin practicing one type of hatha yoga, am I limited to that type?
No, your body and focused mind will benefit from all forms of yoga, establishing a regular practice be it 1 or 7 times a week is what matters most to receive the many benefits of yoga. If you feel like taking it easy one day come to a gentle class like Bamboo and when you feel like heating up visit Flame or Breeze.
Do I have to have a heated room to practice Flame?
No, but if you can warm up a room or even your bathroom with a space heater there are many benefits to having extra heat in the room. One reason is to help the body detox with more ease, by opening the skin and allowing the sweat to purify our bodies. The skin is the largest organ in the body and is continuously creating more skin, so it is the simplest way to rid the body of unnecessary toxins which make us stiff and tired. The heat also helps the muscles to relax which creates better oxygen flow within the muscles and organs of the body, by increasing circulation. Heat helps the beginner focus better. It may sound odd but you will not be thinking about how you may not be balancing if you have a bead of sweat running down your nose. Lastly, the founder of Hot Yoga in America stated he heats up the room because it is 100 degrees in Calcutta, and that is where yoga comes from.
