What is yoga?
The word yoga means union, to yoke. There are 8 different disciplines of yoga called the 8 limbs of yoga, with practice they help us to gain total control of our bodies and mind. The intent for a student is to become more aware of the Holy Spirit within each of us. With practice we gain control over flesh and can surrendar to spirit.
What is Christian Yoga?
At Twist, yoga is the tool we use to develop our self control. Through asana (postures) you will learn about your body, your temple lent to you by God. Through conscious breathing you will gain insight to movement in your conciousness and your nervious system. Learning to focus on God mentally (by repeating Father, Son and Holy Spirit) you will fill your mind with the intent to be with, and live for, God with every breath and every thought. Praying with repetitive statements makes it easier to notice when your mind starts to wander. Father, Son and Holy Spirit is a constant reminder of our yearning for God. As Christians, the Bible tells us to control our flesh, to be more like Jesus, and to surrendar in faith to the Holy Spirit. Meditating on Jesus is safe for Christians, filling our bodies and minds with his presence is his wish for us, and also the goal of this Christian yoga endeavor I call Twist.
What do I need to prepare for class or private lesson?
A smiling face! Wear confortbale clothes that will not bind or hinder movement. It is best if you practice yoga on an empty stomach, 2 hours after your last meal. If you need to, eat a light fruit snack for a little pick me up before practice. Please plan on 5 minutes before and after practicing to relax and prepare and benefit, for and from your practice.
Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
No, this is a common myth, yoga creates flexibility. When a person wants to get strong they lift weights. Likewise when a person wants to get flexible they do yoga. Strength creates flexibility and yoga creates both.
What is the 9 week course?
The 9 week course is designed to teach each yoga student to understand your unique anatomical structure in asana. It incorperates all 8 limbs of yoga to help you understand how to deepen your relationship with a Christ centered yoga practice. You will also develope confidence in your own ablility to conitnue a personal home practice. In the course there is a concious eating plan that detoxes and cleanses your body and palet over the 9 week course. When followed students lose weight, increase muscle tone and have a lighter over all feeling. The 9 week course is goal focused, so begin thinking of 3 goals, one physical, one mental or behavioural change you would like to see and one worldly/service goal to incorporate into your full body prayer sessons.
How often should I practice yoga?
The frequency is up to you. Yoga is a fabulous physical workout and coming 3 times a week you will feel and see the benefit of yoga in a short time. If you are wanting to increase overall conditioning including weight loss, toning, and gaining flexibility, then plan on practiciing 4- 6 times a week. Set a schedule, practice at the same time each day and remember to focus your achievements.
Will I feel results practicing 1 time a week?
IF you only choose to practice 1 time a week, it will take longer for your body to respond to yoga then if you were to practice 2-4 times a week. However, you will begin to increase energy and detoxify within your first month and after 6 months you most likely will be wanting to arrange your schedule to fit in more yoga time. For now enjoy time practicing and bask in the confidence that practicing the Twist series will give you.
Will I get a workout?
Yes, Twist’s 5 unique series' will all give you various degrees of physical exertion. Flame and Breeze are both very powerful yoga. They will tone, balance, help to lose weight. After about 3 classes of either Flame or Breeze you will know each posture and the workout will burn around 700 calories per 90 minutes. In the Bamboo classes you will be relaxing which reduces stress, and stress lowers cortisol levels helping you balance your body’s weight. Stone classes are advanced classes which will tone, relax and bring balance to your already dedicated yoga practice.
Will I get a cardiovascular workout?
Yes similar to cross training, yoga continuously works with the breath which increases cardiovascular health even while relaxing. However, our Breeze and Flame classes will increase your heart rate throughout your class, it is always good to supplement yoga with walking or jogging to keep your heart in top condition. I always recommend adding weight training and cardiovasular training into your weekly yoga sessions. I believe in products that work, which is why I recommend and am an independant coach for Beachbody. I am not that into yoga, but want personal training. Do you offer personal training?
Yes I love all forms of fitness. To help you keep your personal training affordable, I use Beachbody workout tools to lead your daily home workouts, and we meet 1-3 times per week to check form, diet and results. In these personal sessions I will train you incorperating yoga/stretching, cardio and weights depending on your personal goals. The rates for personal training are the same as private yoga session rates, when you join the Beachbody club through me, you will get a 10% discount. The club will help you and I track your progress, incorportate a supportive community of other fitness minded people and using the diet tracker you and I will become more aware of what you are fueling your temple with. Eating a clean helathy diet is 80% of weight loss or muscle building, 20% is your workouts. Taking contorl of your diet and a workout program is a must for result driven goals, so I always work with both when personal training. Before our first meeting you will need to pick up a assesment packet so I can help you achieve your goals effectily and afficiantly.
Do I have to have a heated room to practice Flame?
No, but if you can warm up a room or even your bathroom with a space heater there are many benefits to having extra heat in the room. One reason is to help the body detox with more ease, by opening the skin and allowing the sweat to purify our bodies. The skin is the largest organ in the body and is continuously creating more skin, so it is the simplest way to rid the body of unnecessary toxins which make us stiff and tired. The heat also helps the muscles to relax which creates better oxygen flow within the muscles and organs of the body, by increasing circulation. Heat helps the beginner focus better. It may sound odd but you will not be thinking about how you may not be balancing if you have a bead of sweat running down your nose. Lastly, the founder of Hot Yoga in America stated he heats up the room because it is 100 degrees in Calcutta, and that is where HOT yoga comes from.

Do I have to want to be a yoga teacher to participate in Twist's workshops?
No. Both yoga teachers and yoga students can take all of Twist continuing education courses to further and deepen their understanding in yoga. The only exception to this is the STONE workshop, which has all the other courses being completed as a pre-requisite to taking the course.
Are correspondence course completions an option for Twist's workshops?
This is possible only for the Bible and yoga sutra comparison course. To qualify for continuing education hours for the Bible and Sutra comparison, you must compare Book 2 of the yoga Sutras directly to the Bible and pay your tuition in full. Once all are completed your certificate will be issued. For all other courses you must be present either in Alaska or at a 5 week intensive retreat for class hours with Antiqua to complete each course. There is homework assigned within each workshop that must be turned in before your certificate of completion is given. To qualify for a 200 hour program with Yoga Alliance the FLAME, BREEZE/WAVE and 9 week (or 5 week intensive) must be completed as well as Book 2 of the Bible Sutra comparision. For a 500 hour program with Yoga Alliance the 200 hour program must be compelted in addition to Props and Adjustments, BAMBOO and STONE workshops as well as the Sutra and Bible study comparision of Book 1.
